Acres Homes MSC Fitness Classes


The Be Well Acres Homes Initiative regularly hosts exercise events at the Acres Homes Multi-Service Center. In addition to the standard offerings (see their June 2023 calendar in English & Spanish), a Juneteenth Summer Fit & Wellness Jam is being held on Friday, June 16 from 1pm to 4pm at the MSC (6719 W. Montgomery 77091). Door prizes, fitness demonstrations, and healthy tips will be available for attendees.



ONE EQUITY FUND APPLICATIONS OPEN


The Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity has opened the application portal for Round 2 of their "Open for Business Grant," a transformative opportunity for the communities they serve. The application portal is open through May 31, 2023 at 11:59p.m. CST. The new $8M availability of the grant funds marks the second phase of the three-year, $20M Open for Business program.

The purpose of this grant program is to help diversely owned small businesses and non-profit organizations own more of their assets, such as property, equipment, and technology. It is our belief that ownership allows for greater impact of one’s hard work and investment. We salute small business owners and non-profit organizers for their tremendous efforts to impact our local communities.

Small businesses can apply for $5,000 to $100,000 for the purchase of tangible assets if they meet the following criteria:

  • Business established and registered with the State of Texas prior to December 31, 2021
  • Business location is within the City of Houston
  • The tangible asset must be invested in and impacting a vulnerable community as identified in the Geographic Eligibility Map (most of Acres Homes Complete Community is within the boundary)
  • Have 1- 100 employees, including the owner, full-time, and part-time employees and 1099 contractors engaged in supporting your business
  • 2022 Annual Gross Revenue of $3,000,000 or less
  • Business owners must be 18 years of age and reside in Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, or Waller counties, as their primary home address

Improve Forest Conditions in Houston Communities

The Houston Parks & Recreation Department is working on a grant proposal to secure federal funding for a Hazard Tree Removal Program. The proposed program would involve working with homeowners to identify and remove dead trees and overgrown limbs within their yard, at no cost to the homeowner. Homeowners would also be eligible for replacement trees.

This Hazardous Tree Removal Survey is intended to help us determine how many homeowners would be interested in a program like this. Please share this survey with your neighbors and let us know if the Hazard Tree Removal Program is something your community wants.
