Exciting News: Small Grants Application Rollout for 2024!

LISC small grants are aimed at supporting comprehensive community development, which involves a place-based and intentional approach to improve lives and strengthen communities by working at the intersection of people, places, and systems. DISASTER READINESS AND RESILIENCE CLINIC

The Disaster Readiness and Resilience Clinic: Plan and Prepare will be held on May 4, 2024 at the Metropolitan (West Gray) Multi-Service Center, 1475 W Gray St., Houston, TX 77019, from 9 am to 3 pm. A Whole Community/Disability Access and Functional Needs (DAFN) inclusive workshop for individuals, caregivers, and families to improve their preparedness for the range of threats and hazards that may impact area community members. Promoting readiness through planning and consultation with support and service representatives including healthcare/medical/EMS/pharmacy/DME professionals, emergency managers, electricity providers, public health/housing/mental health/public transportation professionals, faith leaders and others.

Plan Implementation

Preserving neighborhood character

The Special Minimum Lot Size Ordinance allows residents to preserve the lot size character of their neighborhood or block. The map below shows blocks that would qualify for minimum lot size protection. Learn more about the program on our web site or call us at 832-393-6637.

Resilience Districts

To help Houston neighborhoods recover from disasters and reduce the future impact of flooding in vulnerable and at-risk communities, the City of Houston will establish Neighborhood Resilience Plans in three Houston neighborhoods.

These plans will weave together climate adaptation and risk reduction, economic development, infrastructure modernization and social empowerment into one neighborhood strategy. The Neighborhood Resilience Plans will empower neighborhoods to direct future neighborhood-based investments in the most effective ways possible to help reduce flooding, address vulnerability to climate and multiple hazards, improve quality of life, and drive economic opportunity.

Independence Heights

Independence Heights is located north of Loop 610 and west of I-45. The super neighborhood boundaries includes: I-45 (east), Tidwell Rd. (north), N. Shepherd Dr. to railroad track (eastward) to Yale St. (west), I-610 (south).

Located in District H, the Independence Heights neighborhood was selected due to the severity of flood damage from Hurricane Harvey and previous flooding events, vulnerability to climate and other multiple hazards, watershed location, and the presence of active and supportive civic organizations.
