Help Create the new MSC Dreamcatcher sculpture with artist Jesse Lott

Houston renowned artist, a long-time Fifth Ward resident, and recently named Texas State three-dimensional artist for 2022 Jesse Lott, will create The Dreamcatcher, a sculpture to be installed on the exterior of the center. The community will have a hand in deciding key elements of this work. "The voices of local residents will help guide the central imagery of the sculpture—whether it's a sun, a family, or another element that encompasses the spirit of Sunnyside," said Lott. "The community will also be engaged to source materials that are authentic to the neighborhood for incorporation into The Dreamcatcher."

Children as young as five can get vaccinated against COVID-19 at Houston Health Department vaccination sites. Free vaccinations are available at the department’s health centers, some multi-service centers, and pop-up sites across Houston. The sites do not require appointments or insurance.

Getting children vaccinated will help protect them from getting COVID-19 and reduce their risk of severe disease, hospitalizations, or developing long-term COVID-19 complications. The CDC authorized Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11 following FDA evaluation of clinical trial data demonstrating the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness for the age group. Data shows the vaccine is over 90 percent effective at preventing COVID-19 in children ages 5-11. Pfizer’s pediatric COVID-19 vaccine is one-third the size of the adult dosage and administered in two shots given least three weeks apart.

Vaccination of children at health department sites requires parental consent given at the time of vaccination. The department’s pop-up sites frequently include schools and the department will expand school partnerships for the rollout of the vaccine for the 5-11 age group. Visit houstonhealth.org or call 832-393-4220 to find a nearby free vaccination site or schedule an appointment.

    Additional Dose

Sometimes people who are moderately to severely immunocompromised do not build enough protection when they get vaccinated. When this happens, getting an additional dose of the vaccine can help them build more protection.

    • Who: Moderately to severely immunocompromised people who previously received two doses of Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Find a list of qualifying conditions in the original email below or on the CDC website.
    • What: People who qualify are recommended to get an additional dose of the same Moderna or Pfizer vaccine they received for their first two doses. If a person can’t get the same vaccine (Moderna or Pfizer) they received for their first two doses, they can get the other. (People who received Johnson & Johnson vaccine should not get an additional dose at this time.)
    • When: People who qualify should get an additional dose at least 28 days after their second dose. The additional dose is the same formulation as the first two doses.
    • Where: Anywhere vaccines are offered, including Houston Health Department sites.
    • Why: A third dose of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine helps build more protection for people who may not have received enough protection from the first two doses.

    Booster Shot

Sometimes people have an adequate response to an initial vaccination but the protection may decrease over time. When this happens, a booster dose can help “re-invigorate” protection.

    • Who: Residents aged 18 years and older in long-term care settings, people aged 65 and older, people aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions, and other groups at high risk of exposure who previously received Pfizer vaccine for their first two doses. Find a list of qualifying populations in the original email below or on the CDC website.
    • What: People who qualify are recommended to get a booster dose of Pfizer vaccine. The additional dose is the same formulation as the first two doses. Boosters are currently only authorized for people who received Pfizer for their first two doses. Another vaccine type is not recommended to be substituted.
    • When: People who qualify should get a booster shot of Pfizer at least six months after their first two doses of Pfizer.
    • Where: Anywhere vaccines are offered, including Houston Health Department sites.
    • Why: A booster shot of Pfizer vaccine helps boost protection over time.

These are the current recommendations and may change as new data are received and evaluated.

The Links, Incorporated is an international, non-for-profit corporation, established in 1946. It is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations. They have created a Mental Health Calendar for the month of October.

October is filled with a focus on mental health education and depression awareness. The entire month is filled with sharing information and awareness of screenings and prevention, as the following is observed throughout October:

    • National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month
    • Health Literacy Month
    • ADHD Awareness Month
    • Bullying Prevention Month

National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month- This observance works to bring awareness to the need for depression awareness and the need for accessible and affordable mental health screenings. A number of different factors can often come into play with depression that can include a mix of environmental, genetic, psychological, and biological /biochemical components. Not everyone experiences depression in the same way, but it can affect anyone at any time. So, it is important to take that next step and seek out professional help and be screened if you or someone you care about feels they may be depressed. Depression is a highly treatable condition with many different options available, but a professional should be sought out to help determine the best course of action for every individual that is suffering from it.

    August 14, 2021 - 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or until supplies last
Event Location: NRG Park Yellow Lot

The Mayor’s Back to School Fest Presented by Shell is designed to help economically disadvantaged Houston-area elementary school students and their families as they prepare to return to school. The 2020-2021 school year was filled with many unknowns and much uncertainty. While we are returning to a new normal, Houston area families continue to try and find steady ground. There is still a critical need for assistance with basic school supplies, food, and personal protection equipment for students. Once again, the Mayor’s Back to School Fest Presented by Shell is prepared to help fill in these gaps.

Last year’s event was a drive-through distribution in coordination with the Houston Food Bank. This format allowed us to follow CDC guidelines, while still distributing 25,000 backpacks filled with supplies, as well as food boxes to help sustain these families. In order to accommodate the growing number of students who need assistance and to continue to follow safety protocols, this year’s event will once again be a drive-through distribution, at NRG Park Yellow Lot. In addition to providing 25,000 filled backpacks, the Mayor’s Office of Special Events has partnered with the Houston Food Bank to provide food to the families of these students, free of charge. Additionally, face masks will be distributed to ensure as safe a return to school as possible.
