Acres Homes Town Center Concept: Design Review 2024

At January's Super Neighborhood meeting, the Acres Homes Town Center Concept was presented, detailing a visionary plan for community development. This initiative, thanks to the collaboration of Houston LandBank, HAR, and Rogers Partners Architects+ Urban Designers, offers a detailed layout for public spaces, housing, and retail areas in Acres Homes. The presentation provided comprehensive insights, including site plans and architectural renderings, reflecting a commitment to enhancing the community's landscape and living experience. The involvement of these key partners underscores their dedication to the project's success and community betterment. A PDF copy of the presentation can be found under the Helpful Documents.

Inwood Forest Stormwater Detention Basin Project

As many of you in the community may be aware, Harris County Flood Control District has begun activity on the Inwood Forest Stormwater Detention Basin Project. The project encompasses property located both east of Antoine and west of Antoine, with a total of 12 interconnected stormwater detention basins. The stormwater detention basins will be built by the Flood Control District on the former golf course property to provide flood damage reduction benefits during heavy storms and to mitigate impacts of future public City of Houston drainage projects as appropriate. The basins will vary in stormwater storage capacity, which is measured in acre-feet. The goal for the stormwater storage capacity for all the basins combined is approximately 1,200 acre-feet, or a little more than 391 million gallons of stormwater storage, for shared use by the Flood Control District and the City of Houston. One acre-foot is equal to one-acre times a one-foot depth, or 43,560 cubic feet (325,850 gallons).

They have asked us to share updates on the status of the project and anticipated start dates for certain activities. They have communicated that additional tree removal will begin on August 14th, and that by late August or mid-September the excavation process will begin. For any questions you may have about these upcoming activities, they have asked that we direct you to their online comment submission portal so that they can ensure a prompt response. ONE EQUITY FUND APPLICATIONS OPEN

The Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity has opened the application portal for Round 2 of their "Open for Business Grant," a transformative opportunity for the communities they serve. The application portal is open through May 31, 2023 at 11:59p.m. CST. The new $8M availability of the grant funds marks the second phase of the three-year, $20M Open for Business program.

The purpose of this grant program is to help diversely owned small businesses and non-profit organizations own more of their assets, such as property, equipment, and technology. It is our belief that ownership allows for greater impact of one’s hard work and investment. We salute small business owners and non-profit organizers for their tremendous efforts to impact our local communities.

Small businesses can apply for $5,000 to $100,000 for the purchase of tangible assets if they meet the following criteria:

    • Business established and registered with the State of Texas prior to December 31, 2021
    • Business location is within the City of Houston
    • The tangible asset must be invested in and impacting a vulnerable community as identified in the Geographic Eligibility Map (most of Acres Homes Complete Community is within the boundary)
    • Have 1- 100 employees, including the owner, full-time, and part-time employees and 1099 contractors engaged in supporting your business
    • 2022 Annual Gross Revenue of $3,000,000 or less
    • Business owners must be 18 years of age and reside in Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, or Waller counties, as their primary home address

The Small Business FAQ page has much more information about the program. Non-Profits located in and/or serving the City of Houston are also eligible to apply; the Non-Profit FAQ is available with additional information, as well.

The Houston Parks & Recreation Department is working on a grant proposal to secure federal funding for a Hazard Tree Removal Program. The proposed program would involve working with homeowners to identify and remove dead trees and overgrown limbs within their yard, at no cost to the homeowner. Homeowners would also be eligible for replacement trees.

This Hazardous Tree Removal Survey is intended to help us determine how many homeowners would be interested in a program like this. Please share this survey with your neighbors and let us know if the Hazard Tree Removal Program is something your community wants.

To take the survey visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LM5YMBF. The survey is currently open for your submission and will remain open through May 26, 2023. For any questions, please contact AskParks@houstontx.gov.

Acres Home Mobility Study Presentation and Final Report

The final report for the Acres Homes Mobility Study was presented to the Houston Planning Commission on March 30, 2023. A recording of the presentation can be found at this link. A copy of the report can be found at this link. For more background regarding the report, please visit the "Let's Talk Houston" page for the study: Acres Home Mobility Study | Let's Talk Houston (letstalkhouston.org) Below is an excerpt from the Executive Summary of the report providing an overview of the study and its purposes:

The City of Houston Planning and Development Department, in collaboration with Houston Public Works, commissioned the Acres Home Mobility Study (Study) to evaluate ways to improve circulation in the Acres Home Study Area, which currently features multiple mobility challenges in addition to unprecedented growth.

The Study Area is located in Houston’s Acres Home Super Neighborhood, bounded by West Little York Road on the north, West Tidwell Road on the south, Wheatley Street on the east, and TC Jester Boulevard on the west.

The Acres Home Mobility Study included three public meetings, one for each of the three project phases: Existing Conditions Analysis; Gap Analysis; and Mobility Plan. All meetings were held at the Acres Home Community Center at 6 pm.

    • The Existing Conditions Analysis public meeting was held on June 7, 2022
    • The Gap Analysis public meeting was held on August 9, 2022
    • The Final Recommendations public meeting was held on October 6, 2022

The community was involved in the process and provided information regarding the neighborhood, history of the Complete Community Action Plan, specific input on needs in the area, and input on the final recommendations presented. Comments from the public were considered by the city and further information, as well as attendees’ ideas and prioritization suggestions, is provided in the Public Meeting Notes in Appendix C of the study.
